Rugby in Saudi Arabia has experienced a remarkable journey, evolving from a niche expatriate activity to an increasingly popular sport among Saudi nationals. Introduced in the mid-20th century by British expatriates, rugby initially thrived within foreign communities working in the Kingdom’s burgeoning oil industry. Clubs like the Riyadh Rugby Club were established during this period, serving as hubs for the sport’s early development.
The formation of the Saudi Arabian Rugby Federation (SARF) marked a significant milestone in the sport’s domestic evolution. Recognized by Asia Rugby, SARF has been instrumental in promoting rugby across the Kingdom. The federation’s leadership comprises individuals dedicated to fostering the sport’s growth, including Chairman Ali Al Dajani and board members such as Khalid Al Mansour and Sami Amin.
In recent years, rugby has gained momentum among Saudi nationals. Notably, in November 2022, Dammam hosted its inaugural Rugby 10s and 7s Tournament, attracting teams from across the country. The Riyadh Falcons clinched the sevens title, while the Riyadh Scorpions emerged victorious in the 10s competition. This event underscored the growing enthusiasm and competitive spirit within the Saudi rugby community.
A pivotal development in Saudi rugby has been the increasing participation of women. In late 2023, SARF established a women’s department to encourage female involvement in the sport. By January 2024, over 4
0 women and 20 girls under 18 were actively participating in rugby programs. This initiative reflects the Kingdom’s broader efforts to empower women in various sectors, including sports.
Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aims to diversify the nation’s economy and promote s
ports and entertainm
ent. As part of this vision, the Kingdom is set to host the Asian Games in 2034, where rugby sevens will be featured. This presents a unique opp
ortunity for Saudi rugby to showcase its progress on an
international stage.
The trajectory of rugby in Saudi Arabia illustrates a dynamic blend o
f tradition and modernity, with the sport poised for continued growth and integration into the Kingdom’s cultural fabric.
